Question:

The price of sugar is increased 32%, but a family reduced its consumption such that the expenditure on it, has been increased 10% only. If the consumption of sugar initially, was 10 kg, then what is its monthly consumption now?

Options:
A) 8 kg.
B) \(8\cfrac{1}{3}\) kg.
C) 7.5 kg.
D) \(7\cfrac{1}{2}\) kg.
Solution:
Ans: (b) Let the initial price of sugar be \(\unicode{x20B9} \)x per kg.

Initial expenditure = \(\unicode{x20B9} \)10x

New price of sugar be \(\unicode{x20B9} \)1.32x per kg.

Let the new consumption be y kg.

New expenditure = 1.32xy

A.T.Q.,

10x × 1.1 = 1.32xy

\(y=\cfrac{10\times1.1}{1.32}=\cfrac{11}{1.32}=8\cfrac{1}{3}\ kg \)
