Dear Student
Let the velocity of upstream be (v-2)
And, the velocity of downstream be (v+2)
Let the boat cover an x distance in downstream, thus the boat has to retrace the x distance in the upstream direction.
Speed in the downstream direction=v+2=x/3
x=3(v+2)
Speed in the upstream direction=v-2=y/3
y=3(v-2)
y amount of distance is already covered in the upstream direction,
More distance to be covered in the upstream direction = x-y
3(v+2)-3(v-2)=12km
The speed in the upstream =V-2=3-2=1
thus
the time taken to cover the remaining distance =12/1=12 hours
