Let total capacity be 30 ltrs
speed of A=3 ltrs/min and B=2 ltrs/min
time in which it should have been full without a leak =30/(3+2) = 6 mins
let the speed of pipe c be -x ltrs/min
so after leak being closed, the tank gets filled in 2 mins
A and B would fill in 2 mins=(3+2)x2= 10 litres
so, with the leak, in 6 mins, the tank was filled 20 ltrs(as 10 ltrs was filled afterwards of the total 30 ltrs)
so, 20/(3+2-x) =6mins. so x= 5/3 ltrs/mins
time taken by C alone= 30/(5/3) = 18 mins

Question:

One pipe can fill a tank three times as fast as another pipe. If together the two pipes can fill the tank in 86 minutes, then the slower pipe alone will be able to fill the tank in

Options:
A) 144 min
B) 110 min
C) 80 min
D) 178 min
Solution:
Ans: (a)

Let the slower pipe alone fill the tank in x minutes. Then, faster pipes will fill in x /3 minutes

Therefore, 1/x + 3/x = 1/36

4/x = 1/36

X = 144 min.
