if three or more resistors each with the same value are connected in parallel, then the equivalent resistance will be equal to R/n where R is the value of the resistor and n is the number of individual resistances in the combination.

Question:
A wire of resistance R is cut into 'n' equal parts. These parts are then connected in parallel. The equivalent resistance of the combination will be –
Options:
A) nR
B) \(\cfrac{R}{n}\)
C) \(\cfrac{n}{R}\)
D) \(\cfrac{R}{n^2}\)
Solution:

Ans:(d)

Since R is directly proportional to length of the wire, when wire is cut into equal parts, then Resistance of each part = \(\cfrac{R}{n}\)

When the wires are connected in parallel, then the equivalent resistance of combination is –

1/R2 = n/R  +  n/R + ... (n terms)

       = n. n/R

       = n^2/R

R2 = R/n^2.
