Question:
The average of two numbers is 62. If 2 is added to the smallest number, the ratio between the smallest and the largest  numbers becomes 1 : 2. The difference of the numbers is:
Options:
A) 62
B) 40
C) 84
D) 44
Solution:

Sum of the numbers = 124

If the larger number be x, then smaller number = 124 - x

\(\therefore\) \(\cfrac{124-x+2}{x}=\cfrac{1}{2}\)

\(\Rightarrow\) 252 - 2x = =x

\(\Rightarrow\) 3x = 252 \(\Rightarrow\) x= 84

\(\therefore\) Smaller number = 124 - 84 =40

\(\therefore\)  Difference =84 - 40 = 44
