Question:

Amitabh covered a distance 120 km, four hours faster than he had planned to this he achieved by travelling 3 km more every hour than he intended to cover every 1 hour 12 minutes. What was the speed at which Amitabh travelled during the journey?

Options:

10 kmph

13 kmph

15 kmph

18 kmph

Solution:

Let the speed of Amitabh as planned = $x$ kmph

And actual speed during journey = $(x \frac{6}{5} + 3)$ kmph

Now, $\frac{120}{x} - \frac{120}{\frac{6 x}{5} + 3} = 4$

$\begin{matrix} \Rightarrow \frac{6 x + 15 - 5 x}{x (6 x + 5)} = \frac{4}{120} \\ \Rightarrow 24 x^{2} - 60 x - 1800 = 0 \\ \Rightarrow x = 10 \end{matrix}$

Speed as planned = 10 kmph

Speed during journey = $10 \times \frac{6}{5} + 3 = 15$ kmph
