A and B working separately can do a piece of work in 9 and 12 days respectively. If they work for a day alternately and A starts the work. In how many days will the work be completed?

Options:

10 14  days

Solution:


(A + B)’s work in 2 days =  1/9+1/12=7/36  

In 5 pairs of 2 days they will complete 35/36 work

  

That is, after 5 × 2 = 10 days, 

1 - 35/36 =1/36 work is left which will be done by A alone.

A does 1 work in 9 days

∴ A does  1/36 work in 9 ×1/36   =0.25 days

∴ Total number of days = 10+0.25= 10.25days.
