Question:

 An observatory started observing storms in 1981 and experienced 18 years of storms in all. The first summer storm occurred in 1987. For every year of observation , whenever storms occurred in summer, the winters passed without the occurrence of storms, while summers passed without storm when storm occurred in winters. In all, 13 summers and 11 winters passed without storms. Find the earliest possible year since 1981, in which the penultimate storm occurred, given that there was a storm during the last year of observation.

Options:
A)

 1989

B)

 1997

C)

 1990

D)

 1995

Solution:

 Let ‘x’ years be without storm.

 Period of observation = 18 years of storms + x

In these x years there were x summers with no storm and x winters with no storm and in other 18 years either summer or winter with no storm.

 2x + 18 = 13 + 11

 x = 3

 Total period of observation is 21 years. The last storm was in 2001 and the penultimate storm was in 1997.

Hence, [B].
