why not option c

Question:

Directions: sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best express the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech. 

He said, “I was washing my clothes when you called.” 

Options:
A)

He said that he was washing his clothes when I had called. 

B)

He said he was washing his clothes when I called. 

C)

He said that he had been washing his clothes when I called. 

D)

He said that he has been washing his clothes when I had called. 

Solution:

Ans: (a) He said that he was washing his clothes when I had called.

washing clothes and his friends calling happened simultaneously. Moreover, "when" is present which indicates it is a time clause. Hence the tense of the reporting speech will not change. It should be option B. Correct me if I am wrong.

@girdhari...BRother if simultaneous action doesn't change then in second clause starting with when why have we used HAD?
