d should be correct answer...

Question:
DIRECTIONS: In the following questions, sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect Speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct Speech.

He said to her, "What a cold day!"

Options:
A) He told her that it was a cold day.
B) He exclaimed that it was a cold day.
C) He exclaimed sorrowfully that it was a cold day.
D) He exclaimed that it was a very cold day.
Solution:
Exclamatory Sentence :

It was a very cold day is correct because the given reported speech is an exclamatory sentence it expresses strong feeling or emotions like joy, sorrow, surprise, hatred, contempt, etc.

The words 'What' & 'How' of Reporting Speech are replaced with words 'Very' Or 'Great'. 'Very' comes before Adjective and 'Great' comes before Noun.

How to change Exclamatory Sentences into Indirect Speech? :

Reporting verb SAID / SAID TO should be changed into EXCLAIMED.

Use the conjunction word THAT.

Change that into a Statement.

When WHAT or HOW is followed by an adjective, use VERY but when WHAT is followed by a noun use GREAT.
