Question:

A room 8m long, 6m broad and 3m height has two windows 1 12 m × 1 m and a door 2m × 1 12  m. Find the cost of papering the walls with paper 50cm wide at 25 paise per meter:

Solution:

Area of walls = 2(length + breadth) × height

= 2(8 + 6) × 3 = 84m2

Area of two windows and a door = (1 12 × 1) + (2 × 1 12 ) = 6m2

∴ Area to be covered = 84 – 6

= 78m2

∴ Area of paper = Area to be covered = 78

⇒ (length × breadth) of paper 78

⇒ length of paper =  7850 × 100m

= 156m

∴ cost =  156×25100  = Rs.39
