why did u add 1 to 85?

Question:
The average salary per head of all workers of an institution is Rs. 60. The average salary per head of 12 officers is Rs. 400. The average salary per head on the rest is Rs. 56. Then, the total number of workers in the institution is —

National High Way Solution:

Total number of workers is considered as x
Average of 12 officers salary = 12 x 400 = 4800
4800 + 56x = ( 12 + x ) x 60
4800 + 56x = 720 + 60x
4x = 4080
X = 1020
∴ Total number of workers = 12 + x = 12 + 1020 = 1032



Straight High Way Solution:

Total no. of workers be x
Their average salary = Rs 60
Total salary of all workers = 60x
Average salary of 12 officers = Rs 400
Total salary of 12 officers = 12 × 400 = Rs 4800
Average salary of rest of employees = Rs 56
Total salary of these rest of employees = (x - 12)×56
⇒ (x - 12)×56 + 4800 = 60x
⇒56x - 672 + 4800 = 60x
⇒ 4x = 4128
⇒ x = 1032
Total number of workers in the factory = 1032
