what if canal is not fully filled ... if 4m depth is not from top to bottom...

Question:

A canal is 5 mtr. wide at bottom and 8 mtr. wide at top. The depth of water is 4 mtr. Water is flowing in the canal with the speed of 10 mtr./second. How much cubic mtr. of water will flow in 1 minute?

Options:
A) 7800
B) 15,600
C) 23,400
D) 11,700
Solution:
Ans: (b) Area of the base \(\cfrac{1}{2}\) (sum of parallel sides) × Height

= \(\cfrac{1}{2}(8+5)\times4=26\) m2

\(\because\) Speed of water = 10 m/sec.

\(\therefore\) Volume of water = 26 × 10 × 60 = 15600 m3

Dear Student, According to given instruction if we frame the image there are parallel sides are different and and depth means perpendicular distance between parallel lines thus the shape is trapezium and we use given formula to calculate area. Keep learning with us! Best wishes Team Toprankers

then first use the concept of similar triangles and then find the width of top from which the water is flowing.
