Dear Student
the performance of the players was rather worse than I had Expected.
Why should we use I had Expected? I because the expectation was done at the beginning of the game which was then proved wrong just because of the bad performance of the players.
If we use I expected, which means that the person is expecting in between the ongoing game and not at the beginning of the game.
Thanks and Regards
