If the point A(1, 5) , B(k, 1) and C(4, 11) are collinear, then find the value of k = ?

Solution:

For points to be collinear, area of the triangle = 0

$∆$ = $\frac{1}{2} [x_{1} (y_{2} - y_{3}) + x_{2} (y_{3} - y_{1}) + x_{3} (y_{1} - y_{2})]$

$∆$ = $\frac{1}{2} [1 (1 - 11) + K (11 - 5) + 4 (5 - 1)]$

0 = $\frac{1}{2} [- 10 + 6 k + 16]$

$\to$ 6 k + 6 = 0

$\to$ k = –1
