Question:
A leak can empty a completely filled tank in 25 hours. The tank is full of water and a tap is opened which fills 3 litres of water per minute in the tank. the leak now takes 40 hours to empty the tank, then find the capacity of tank.
Options:
A) 8000 litre 
B) 9000 litre 
C) 12000 litre
D) 11000 litre

Dear Student,

A leakage can empty tank in 25 hours.
for 1 hour = 1/25 part of the tank

tap can fill the tank in 1 min. = 3 liter
tap can fill the tank in 60 min. (1 hour) = 180 liter

leakage in one hour = 1/40 part

Work done by the inlet in 1 hour = 1/25 - 1/40 = 3/200
Given, volume of 3/200 part = 180 liters.
⇒ Volume of whole = 180 * 200/3= 12000 liters.
