Question:

A completes a work in 8 days less than B. If they worked together and complete in $6 \frac{3}{7}$ days then B alone can complete it in how many days?

Options:

A)

14 $\frac{1}{2}$ days

B)

24 days

C)

18 days

D)

16 days

Solution:

Let A takes x days

B takes x+8 days

So, $\frac{1}{x} + \frac{1}{x + 8} = \frac{7}{45}$

$\frac{2 x + 8}{x^{2} + 8 x} = \frac{7}{45}$

$7 x^{2} + 56 x = 90 x + 360$

$7 x^{2} - 34 x - 360 = 0$

$7 x^{2} - 70 x + 36 x - 360 = 0$

$7 x (x - 10) + 36 (x - 10) = 0$

$(x - 10) = 0; 7 x + 36 = 0$

$x = 10; x = - \frac{36}{7}$

So, A takes 10 days

B takes 18 days
