If downstream speed is 3 units then upstream speed is 3x2/3=2units. Then speed of boat in still water =(3+2)/2=2.5unit and average speed of boat in downstream and upstream =(3+2)/2=2.5unit. Hence the ration must be 1:1.

Question:
The speed of a boat in upstream is 2/3 that of downstream find the ratio of speed of boat in still water and to the average speed of boat in downstream and upstream?
Options:
A) 24/25
B) 25/24
C) 5/12
D) 12/24
Solution:

X = Speed of boat in still water

Y = Speed of stream

Then

\(\cfrac{x+y}{x-y}\) =  \(\cfrac{3}{2}\)

 \(\cfrac{x}{y}\) =  \(\cfrac{5}{1}\)

Average speed of downstream and upstream

= \(\cfrac{2(5+1)(5-1)}{(5+1)+(5-1)}=\cfrac{48}{10}=\cfrac{24}{5}\)

Required ratio =  \(\cfrac{5}{24/5} = \cfrac{25}{24}\)
