why we have taken k here

Question:

The speed of the engine of Gondwana Express is 42 km/h when no compartment is attached, and the reduction in speed is directly proportional to the square root of the number of compartments attached. If the speed of the train carried by this engine is 24 km/h when 9 compartments are attached, the maximum number of compartments that can be carried by the engine is:

Options:
A)

    49

B)

    48

C)

    24

D)

    35

Solution:

    decrease in speed  α    no.of compartment added

    (42 – 24) =  K9

       18 = 3K     K = 6

ATQ,

  42=Kno. of  wagons

      no. of wagons =  4262=72=49

      maximum no. of wagons = 49 – 1 = 48
