put 1/x=p 1/y=q

Question:
Which one of the following is the solution of the system of linear equations \(\left ( \cfrac {5}{x} \right )-\left ( \cfrac {4}{y} \right )=3\) and \(\left ( \cfrac {9}{x} \right )-\left ( \cfrac {8}{y} \right )=7\)
Options:
A) x is + ve and y is - ve
B) y is + ve and x is - ve
C) Both x and y are + ve
D) Both x and y are -ve
Solution:
Ans: (d)

\(\cfrac{5}{x}-\cfrac{4}{y}=3\)           ........ (i)

\(\cfrac{9}{x}-\cfrac{8}{y}=7\)           ........(ii)

Multiplying (i) by (2) and subtracting from (ii)

\(\cfrac{1}{x}=-1\) or x = -1

Then, from (i),  \(-5-\cfrac{4}{y}=3\)  or \(\cfrac{4}{y}= -8\)

\(\therefore \ y = -\cfrac{1}{2}\)

Hence, both x and y are negative (-ve).
