I think the expenditure is not 48k. The total income is. Out of that total income, 8k is savings and rest 40k are expenditures.
If the entire pie chart shows only expenditures, as per your calculations, then there should not be any place for savings in that chart. The pie chart is a break up of a single unit. If savings are mentioned, then the pie chart can only be a breakup of the total income.

Question:

DIRECTIONS: The pie-chart given here shows expenditure incurred by a family on various items and their savings, which amount to Rs.8000 in a month.

What is the total expenditure of the family for the months?

Options:
A)

Rs.40000

B)

Rs.48000

C)

Rs.45000

D)

Rs.50000

Solution:

Ans: (a)

Expenditure = total - saving

                  = 48000 - 8000

                  = 40000
