"WAS" will be changed to "HAD BEEN"

Question:

In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect Speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct Speech and select your answer


He said that when he was a boy he could stay up as long as he liked.

Options:

He said, "When I had been a boy I could stay up as long as I liked."

Solution:

The sentence is in indirect speech and to convert it in direct-(The person is changed into pronoun i.e. He--> I) and Past Tense will get changed into Past Perfect Tense.

Direct Speech:He said, "When I had been a boy I could stay up as long as I liked."
