Question:

PQ and RS are common tangents of two circles intersecting at A and B. AB, when produced both sides, meet the tangents PQ and RS at M and N respectively. If AB = 6 cm. and MN = 10 cm, then find the value of PQ.

Options:
A)

4 cm

B)

8 cm

C)

10.5 cm

D)

Can't be answered

Solution:

Ans: (b)

PQ2 + 4PC2 = 4CT2 + 100

PQ2 + 4PC2 – 4CT2 = 100

PQ2 + 4(PC2 – CT2) = 100

PQ2 + 4 ×  AB24    = 100

PQ2 + AB2 = 100

PQ2 + 62 = 100

PQ2 = 100 – 36

PQ =  64

PQ = 8 cm
