differentiate the function with respect to x

Question:
From a square sheet of side 12cm, a square of side x cm was cut from each of its corners where x is an integer. The remaining sheet was folded to make an open cuboid. Which of the following values of x will result in the maximum possible volume of the cuboid so formed?
Options:
A) 4
B) 3
C) 2
D) 1
Solution:
Ans: (c) 


For the cuboid termed, length = breadth = (12 - 2x) cm and height = x cm.

Volume of the cuboid formed = (12 - 2x) (12 - 2x) (x) cubic cm. Length of cuboid > 0

12 - 2x > 0 i.e 6 > x

x is an integer.

∴ x = 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5

Among these values of x, x = 2 results in the maximum value of the volume x (12 - 2x)2.

∴ x = 2 results in the maximum volume of the cuboid.
