Why 12- x and 15-x used

Question:

A supply of water lasts for 20days if 20 gallons leak off every day, but only for 15 days if 60 gallons leak off daily. What is the total quantity of water in the supply.

Options:
A)

2400

B)

1125

C)

3350

D)

1250

Solution:

Ans: (a)Let consuption is x gallon per day


(20x + 400)=  (15x + 900)

 x = 100

Quantity of water = (20x + 400) = 2400

but by this equations.if i want to get the value of consuption say X,WHY I GET A NEGATIE VALUE OF X?

consumption be x and supply y:
150x + 12*150 = y ....(i)
100x + 15*100 = y ....(ii)
multiply i by 2 and ii by 3 and equate,
4500 - 3600 = 3y - 2y
y = 900
