Question:
The cross section of a canal is a trapezium in shape. If the canal is 20 m wide at the top and 12 m wide at the bottom and the area of the cross-section is 640 sq. m, find the length of the cross section.
Options:
A) 80 m
B) 40 m
C) 60 m
D) 70 m
Solution:

Solution: (B)

Length of cross section = \(\cfrac{640\times2}{(20+12)}\)   = 40 m

Alt sol:

Cross section area = 1/2 x ( a + b ) x d

where a and b are the parallel sides, d is the perpendicular distance between them.

1/2 x ( a + b ) x d = 640

d = (640 x 2) / (20+12)

d = (640 x 2) / 32 = 40m
