Running engine would be more apt than engine running - i think

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the following questions, some of the sentences have errors and some are correct. Find out which part of a sentence has an error. If a sentence is free from errors, mark your answer (D).

As the thieves ran out of the bank (A) / they got into the getaway car (B)/ which was waiting with its engine running. (C) No Error (D)

Options:
A)

(A)

B)

(B)

C)

(C)

D)

(D)

Solution:

Ans:(a) Use 'when' in place of 'as'.

* We use 'as' to introduce two events happening at the same time. After 'as', we can use simple or continuous form of verb. The continuous from emphasises an action that interrupts or occurs during the process of another action.

Eg:- As she walked to the door, she thanked them for a lovely dinner.

* We can use 'when' to introduce a single completed event, In these cases, we usually use a continuous verb in the main clause to describe the background event.
