but we can use both infinitive and gerund with start

Sam started talking really fast.

Sam started to talk really fast.

He started realizing that if one wanted to eat one had to work.  
Options:
A) He started realizing 
B) No error
C) that if one wanted

Solution:
Ans: (a) Change 'started realizing' into 'started to realize'. Infinitive form of verbs is preferred with 'understand' realize and know'.

" to realize" is more appropriate here.
