explain it

Question:

DIRECTIONS: In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best express the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

My boss said to me, "you must wear formals from tomorrow."

Options:
A)

My boss ordered me that I had to wear formals from the next day

B)

My boss ordered me that I should wear formals from the next day

C)

My boss ordered me that I had to wore formals from the next day

D)

My boss ordered me that I had to wear formals from tomorrow

Solution:

Ans: (a) The reporting speech 'My boss said to me' is in the past tense. The reported speech ' you must wear formals from tomorrow' is in present indefinite tense.

Since the reporting speech is an imperative sentence (Expressing command) it is right to say ' The boss ordered me that'.

For the reported speech which is in present indefinite , the reported speech should be in past indefinite. The reported speech should therefore be 'I had to wear formals from the following day/the next day'.

Tomorrow in direct speech is changed to 'the following day/ the next day ' in the indirect speech.
