why 259 is not the answer?

Question:

Sum and difference of the LCM and HCF of two numbers are 592 and 518 respectively. If the sum of two numbers be 296. Then larger number is:

Options:
A)

185

B)

259

C)

196

D)

None of these

Solution:

Ans: (a)

Let LCM and HCF be h and k respectively.

 h + k = 592 and h – k = 518

So, h = 555, k = 37

Let the number are 37a, 37b respectively.

37a + 37b = 296

a + b = 8

Possible pair of co-prime numbers are (1, 7) and (3, 5).

So numbers are (37 × 1, 37 × 7) and (37 × 3, 37 × 5) = (37, 259) and (111, 185)

So, largest number is 185.
