why option A is incorrect

Question:
DIRECTIONS: A sentence/ a part of the sentence is underlined. Below are given alternatives to the underlined part at (A), (B), (C) which may improve the sentence. Choose the correct alternative. 
I told him I waited for him for an hour the previous day. 
Options:
A) had waited
B) had been waiting 
C) was waiting 
D) No improvement 
Solution:
Ans: (a) ‘had waited’ should replace the underlined part, as the sentence is in indirect form and the past tense is change into past participle tense form.

Dear Student,

Correct ans. is A because in its direct form "yesterday" is used in which the sentence will be in "past indefinite" hence ,when it is changed into indirect form the sentence will be in " past perfect" form.
