why only (1,7) and (3,5) ..... why not (2,6),(4,4) also

Question:
The sum of two numbers is 24 and their HCF is 3. How many pairs of such numbers are possible ?
Options:
A) 2
B) 3
C) 4
D) 5
Solution:
Ans: (a)

HCF of two numbers = 3

Hence, the numbers can be given by 3x & 3y {where x and y are co-prime}

\(\therefore\) 3x + 3y = 24

    x +   y = 8

possible pairs  (1, 7) (3, 5)

\(\therefore\) Answer is 2.
