Question:

. In a race the winner beats the 2nd 3rd, etc runners by 10,20,30,40,50,60 m resp. By how much distance will the 3rd runner up beat the 4th runner up if he was 11.11m ahead of the 4th runner up when the 1st runner up finished the race.

Options:
A)

 14.28 m

B)

 16.67 m

C)

 13.33 m

D)

 12 m

Solution:

Its said that when the 1st runner-up finishes the race the 3rd runner-up was 11.11 or 100/9m ahead of 4th runner up.so let the total distance be 100m.(assume)now from 1st runner-up to last they cover 90,80,70,60,50,40 m when the winner completes 100m.so when the 1st runner up is at 90 ,3rd runner up is at 70 and 4th runner up at 60.=> applying simple unitary method, when 1st runner up will be at 100, 3rd runner up will be at 70*100/90 m= 700/9 m and 4th runner up at 600/9m.

hence difference between 3rd and 4th = 700/9 -600/9 =100/9 [hence our assumption of total distance is correct.]=> when 3rd runner up will be at 100 then difference will be

1009×1007009    =100/7 =14.28m
