If a clock is started at noon, then at 16 minutes past 5 pm, the hour hand turns through:

Options:
A) 155°
B) 158°
C) 160°
D) 163°
Solution:
Ans: (b)

At 5 pm exact, the hour hand turns through 150° and for 16 extra minutes, hour hand turns = \(\cfrac{16}{60}\times\) 30o = 8o

\(\therefore\) Required angle = 158°

360 degree is covered by hour hand in 12 hours
so 30 degree is covered in 1 hour.

given that at noon we know that both hour and minute hand is at 12
so total degree covered by hour hand in 5hours + 16 minute =5 hrs +16/60 hours =79/15 hours
since 30 degree is covered in 1 hr so 79/15*30 =158 degree is covered in 5hr and 16 minutes
