Question:

The speed of a boat in upstream is 2/3 that of downstream. Find the ratio of the speed of the boat in still water and to the average speed of the boat in downstream and upstream?

Options:
A)

4:5

B)

25:24

C)

3:2

D)

2:3

Solution:

Ans: (b)

X = Speed of boat in still water

Y = Speed of stream

Then

X+YXY    = \(\cfrac{3}{2}\)

\(\cfrac{X}{Y}\)  = \(\cfrac{5}{1}\)

The average speed of downstream and upstream

 \(\cfrac{2(X+Y)(X-Y)}{(X+Y)+(X-Y)}\)      = \(\cfrac{24Y}{5}\)

Therefore, Required ratio = X:\(\cfrac{24Y}{5}\)=25Y:24Y=25:24{Since X=5Y}
