DIRECTIONS: In the following quesitons, a sentence has been given in direct/indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one that best expresses the same sentence in indirect/direct speech.

He said to her, "What a cold day!"

Options:

He told her that it was a cold day.

He exclaimed that it was a cold day.

He exclaimed sorrowfully that it was a cold day.

He exclaimed that it was a very cold day.

Solution:

Ans: (d)

Use conjunction ‘that’, and write ‘exclaimed’ in exclamatory sentences.

If 'What a' use in reported speech rule is 

Subject + exclaimed + that + other subject (from Reported Speech) + verb (by changing the tense) + very + adjective (or great + noun)+ ….
