Hi,
please explain the concept .Many times I get confused between the use of , '' where had I been '' or ''where I had been'' .I ll be thankful for this.....

Question:

Directions: A sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

John said to me, “Where have you been last night?” 

Options:
A)

John asked me where had I been the previous night. 

B)

John asked me where I have been the previous night. 

C)

John asked me where I am the previous night. 

D)

John asked me where I had been the previous night. 

Solution:

Ans: (d) John asked me where I had been the previous night.

in indirect speech we don't use interrogative so if direct is interriogative simply change it as in above question where have you is changed as where i had ,just keep this concept in mind

In indirect speech verb never comes before subject.
so .....where i had been will be correct... in indirect speech
