Question:

Directions: The following table shows the number of employees hired and fired by five different companies in the years from 2004-08. No company fired more employees in any year than they hired. Study the data carefully and answer the questions that follow.

If the ratio of the number of employees hired to the number of employees fired during 2007 and 2008 in the companies B and E together is 7 : 6, then find the maximum possible difference between the employees hired by B in 2007 and the employees hired by E in 2007. (B<E)

Options:
A)

 691

B)

 491

C)

 291

D)

 191

Solution:

Employees hired by B & E in 2007 and 2008 =

=x+y+438+376=x+y+814

Employees fired by B & E in 2007 & 2008

=200+400+400+290=1290

Ratio =  =x+y+8141290=76

x+y=691

Now, (x<y) and minimum value of x can be 250 because “no company fired more employees in any year than they hired”.

So  y+x=691ymax=691-200=491

so difference x-y=491-200=291
