If we carefully examine the sentence under consideration
"The more they withdraw into communal shells the (_) they stand to loose."
This sentence has a negative aspect to it, only because it is including the word "LOSE".
and, conversely if we spell the word "HIGHER" it gives us a more postive aspect of the given situation.
So in this sentence the word higher wont be used.
had, the sentence been
"The more they withdraw into communal shells the (_) their chances to lose."
As this sentence now includes (_) chances
the higher can come in its place
because clearly the chance to lose is higher.
