Too much calculation

Question:

One type of liquid contains 25% of milk, the other contains 30% of milk. A cane filled with 6 parts of the first liquid and 4 parts of the second liquid. The percentage of milk in the new mixture is:

Options:
A) 26%
B) 27%
C) 28%
D) 29%
Solution:
Ans: (b)

The required percentage of milk in the new mixture

= \(\cfrac{Quantity\ of \ milk\ in\ the\ new\ mixture}{Quantity\ of \ the\ new\ mixture}\ \ \ \ \ \ \times100\)

= \(\cfrac{6\ parts\ of\ \ 25 \%\ milk+ 4\ parts\ of \ 30\%\ milk}{(6\ parts\ + 4\ parts)of\ the \ liquid}\times100\)

= \(\cfrac{6\times\cfrac{25}{100}+4\times\cfrac{30}{100}}{10}\times100\)

= (15 + 12) = 27

This equation can be solved by the method of alligation

\(\cfrac{30-x}{x-25}=\cfrac{6}{4}=\cfrac{3}{2}\)

or 60 - 2 x = 3x - 75

or 5x = 60 + 75

\(\therefore\) x = 27%
