Question:

The average age of was couple is 25 years. The average age of the family just after the birth of the first child was 18 years. The average age of the family just after second child was born was 15 years, and after 3rd and 4th (who are twin) were born was 12 years. If the present average age of the family of six person is 16 years, how old is the eldest child.

A)

6 years

B)

7 years

C)

8 years

Solution:

Ans: (d)

Initially total age of couple = 50

After the birth of first child, 

Average age of family = 18

So, Total age of family = 54

After the birth of second child,

Total age of family = 60 

Which means age of older child = 2 years

After the birth of twins,

Total age of family = 72

Which means age of older child = 5 years

Finally, the total age of the family = 96

So, The age of the older child = 9 years

Given answer is correct
Initially total age of couple = 50
After the birth of first child,
Average age of family = 18
So, Total age of family = 54 ( couple and chiid)
After the birth of second child,
Total age of family = 60 ( Difference is 6 = 2 + 2 + 2 )
Which means age of older child = 2 years
After the birth of twins,
Total age of family = 72 ( Difference is 12 = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3)
Which means age of older child = 5 years
Finally, the total age of the family = 96 ( Difference is 24 = 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4)
So, The age of the older child =( 2 + 3 + 4) = 9 year
