Question:

In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect Speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct Speech and select your answer


The king said to him, 'you are banished from my kingdom. If after sixteen days you are found in my kingdom, you shall suffer death’.

Options:
A)

The king said to him he was banished from his kingdom and added if he was found in his kingdom after sixteen days he would suffer death.

B)

The king told him he was banished from his kingdom and added if he was found in his kingdom after sixteen days he would suffer death.

C)

The king told him he was banished from his kingdom and added if he is found in his kingdom after sixteen days he would suffer death. 

D)

The king told him he was banished from his kingdom and added if he was found in his kingdom after sixteen days he will suffer death. 

Solution:

The present verbs ‘is/are/am’ are changed into the past forms ‘was/were’ and the modal verb ‘shall’ is changed into ‘would’ while changing a direct statement or narration into an indirect one.
