that river will come

Question:

In the following question, a sentence has been given in Direct/Indirect speech. Out of the four alternatives suggested, select the one which best expresses the same sentence in Indirect/Direct speech.

The artist said, "I was painting a picture here at the bank of this river."

Options:
A)

The artist said that he had been painting a picture here at the bank of that river.

B)

The artist said that he had been painting a picture there at the bank of this river.

C)

The artist said that he had been painting a picture there at the bank of that river.

D)

The artist said that he had been painting a picture here at the bank of this river.

Solution:

Reporting Verb (said) is in past tense so the tense of reported speech will be changed according to past. Past continuous tense changes into past perfect continuous tense i.e. was painting into had been painting. Change ‘I’ into ‘He’ and ‘Here’ into ‘There’. This river will be changed into that river.
