In first case sum of money becomes 3 times the principal , it means amount = 3 P
So SI = A - P = 3P - P = 2P
SI = P*R*T / 100
2P = P*R*12 /100
R = 100/6 %
Now in second case , Sum becomes 5 times the principal , It means A = 5P
SI = 5P - P = 4P
SI = P*R*T / 100
4P = P*(100/6)*T / 100
T = 6*4
T = 24 years
The given answer is correct.
