half of others=4%/2=2%
new punjabi= 17+2=19%
% increase= (19%-17%)/17% *100=2%/17% *100
=200/17=12%

Question:

DIRECTIONS: The following pie diagram gives the language based composition of a particular cosmopolitan city in India. Study the pie diagram carefully and answer the question based on it.

  

Total population of the city = 413 million

If half of the other language speaking are found to be Punjabis, what is the approx percent increased in Punjabis? 

Options:

Solution:

Ans: (b)

Others = 4%

half of others = 2%

so increase in Punjabis = \(\frac{2}{17} \times 100\) = 12% (Approx)

sorry but I think u r on a wrong track.
2% cant be directly added in 17 bcoz 17% means 17 in 100 but here as per question half of other i.e. 2 out of 4 not out of 100.so first find 2 %of 4 is 0.08. this is d required increase on 17. implies tat
{0.08/17}*100=0.5

there is ambiguity according to question your explanation is correct and according to solution question should be 2% of the other language speaking of found to be punjabis. we will be fixed it..
