You are saying that we use "EXCEPT" after generalising words like everything, everybody, NOBODY etc". The question contains the word "NOBODY", then why have you used "Except for"??

Question:
DIRECTIONS: Some part of the sentences have errors and some are correct. Find out which part of a sentence has an error and blacken the oval []  corresponding to the appropriate letter (A), (B), (C) and (D). If a sentence is free from error, blacken the oval corresponding to 'No error' in the Answer Sheet.
Except (A)/ John and Mary, (B)/ nobody came. (C)/ No error (D)
Options:
A) (A)
B) (B)
C) (C)
D) (D)
Solution:
Ans: (a) Use ‘Except for’. After generalizing words like 'all, any, every, no, everything nowhere, anybody, nobody, whole', we often use only ‘except’.

For eg  : He ate everything on his plate except the beans.

But, this does not happen before all, etc.

For eg : Except for John and Mary, nobody come. Here, ‘nobody’ signifies everyone except John and Mary.
