On the banks doesn't seem correct, as Mughal army was on the banks
the rebels were on the other side, and it isn't mentioned that they were on the opposite bank of the river, it's definitely mentioned that they were on the other side of the river, hence across seems better

Suddenly a warrior on a chestnut charger plunged into the raging torrent. As the man on the horse struggled on to the opposite bank, a thrill ran through the army. It was the emperor, Jalaluddin Akbar! With a roar, the soldiers followed him across and within two days, they had put down the rebellion so thoroughly that Gujarat remained in Mughal hands for the next 185 years.

Just beyond it says, its doesn't mean that on the opposite bank!, does it?
