The steamship Rangoon was as fast as the Magnolia, but not as comfortable. During the first part of the journey to Hong Kong, which was three thousand five hundred miles, the weather was very good and the ship sped along.

He told her of the bet which was taking them around the world. Mrs Aouda had smiled when she heard that. She felt that since she owed her life to this strange man, he could not lose his bet.
