1/2 should be corect answer

Question:
A butler stole wine from a butt of sherry, which contained 30% spirit and he replaced what he had stolen by wine containing 12% spirit. Then, the butt contained 18% spirit. How much of the butt did he steal?
Options:
A) \(\cfrac{1}{3}\) part
B) \(\cfrac{2}{3}\)  part
C) \(\cfrac{1}{2}\)  part
D) None of these
Solution:

It means \(\cfrac{1}{3}\) part of the butt of sherry was left so \(\cfrac{2}{3}\) part of the butt of sheery was stolen.

Alternate Sol:

X is the amount of wine

Y amount was removed

Remaining = (X-Y)

Amount of spirit remaining = 0.3(X-Y)

Now Y is added but it contains only 12% wine

So total spirit left = 0.3(X-Y)+0.12Y = 0.18X

so Y = 0.12X/0.18 = X * 2/3

So 2/3rd wine was stolen.

2/3 is the correct answer.........

Let

X is the amount of wine

Y amount was removed

Remaining = (X-Y)

Amount of spirit remaining = 0.3(X-Y)

Now Y is added but it contains only 12% wine

So total spirit left = 0.3(X-Y)+0.12Y = 0.18X

so Y = 0.12X/0.18 = X * 2/3

So 2/3rd wine was stolen.
