Question:

In a mixture of milk and water, the ratio of milk and water is 14:3. 16.5 litres of the mixture is taken out from the vessel and 5.5 litres of pure water and 11 litres of pure milk is added to the mixture. The concentration of water in the resultant mixture is 20%. Find the initial quantity of mixture before replacement.

Options:
A)

110 litres

B)

115 litres

C)

85 litres

D)

90 litres

E)

None of these

Solution:

Ans:(c)

Milk         :     water

14           :      3

After removal of 16.5-litre mixture ratio of milk and water remains the same.

Now, added milk is 11 litre and water is 5.5 litre

So, the ratio of water: milk

        1     :  2

now, concentration of milk in the first mixture =  1417

concentration of milk in the second  mixture =  23

So , after mixing these two, new mixture will be:

i.e.   13       :  117

⇒    17    :    3

Now, 3 unit      = 16.5 litre.

∴    17 unit =   16.53×17

= 5.5×17

= 93.5 litre

Removed mixture        = 16.5 litre

∴    Initial mixture = 93.5 + 16.5

                   = 110 litre
